Saskatchewan Road Test Routes

The best way to build driving confidence is by practising on the same streets, intersections, and traffic situations that SGI examiners use daily during actual tests. Familiarity with the test environment is known to greatly reduce nerves and sharpen awareness come test day.

How Real Are the App Routes?

The routes on the app are made to mirror the same routes you’ll encounter at SGI driver examination centres. Here’s how they're created:

  • Local Driver Feedback: Routes are mapped from recent experiences from both Saskatchewan driving instructors and learners.
  • GPS Recording: GPS is used to map out the exact roads used during live exams.
  • Footage Review: When tests are recorded, the footage is analysed and mapped for accuracy.

Important Practice Note

These sample routes you see on this website are for practice only, and do not represent official SGI exam routes. For accurate, guided practice - including turn-by-turn navigation - be sure to download the app.

Saskatchewan’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program

No matter your age, if you're a first-time driver you must complete the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. Managed by SGI, it's designed to give you enough safe driving experience before you become a fully experienced Class 5 driver.

The Six Stages of GDL

  1. Class 7 Learner’s Licence - Minimum age 16 (15 with high school driver education). Requires you passing the knowledge test, signs test, and vision test.
  2. Driver Education - Mandatory training with a SGI-certified instructor. High school students take 30 hours in-class + 6 hours in-car. Private students take 6 hours in-class + 6 hours in-car.
  3. Class 5 Novice 1 Licence - Earned by holding your Learner’s for 9+ months and completing your driver education. Solo driving allowed with restrictions.
  4. Novice 1 Driving Period - Practise for 6 months while following Novice restrictions.
  5. Novice 2 Driving Period - Practise for 12 months incident-free, with restrictions.
  6. Full Class 5 Licence - Once Novice 2 completed without collisions, convictions, or suspensions, you graduate to a full Class 5 driver.

Key Restrictions During GDL

  • Zero alcohol and drug tolerance at all stages until you’re a full Class 5 driver.
  • No cellphone use (whether hand-held or hands-free).
  • Passenger limits: Learners must drive with a supervising driver; Novice 1 can only carry 1 non-family passenger; Novice 2 allows more flexibility - but still has limits.
  • Until you graduate, you cannot supervise another driver, drive a taxi/rideshare, or apply for a commercial licence.

Vehicles You Can Drive

Under GDL restrictions, with a Class 5 licence you can drive passenger cars, light trucks, vans, motorhomes, farm trucks, and certain buses (without passengers). Heavy trucks and commercial use is restricted until you’re fully licensed.

Our Tip: Keep your record clean - any suspensions or traffic convictions will likely extend your time in GDL.

The Class 5 Road Test

This is the key step after the Learner stage in Saskatchewan’s GDL program. It determines whether you’ve developed safe enough driving habits to confidently handle everyday road situations.

What the Test Covers

  • Obeying traffic signs and signals
  • Anticipating potential hazards
  • Performing backing-up, parallel parking, and reversing manoeuvres
  • Maintaining proper lane positioning (plus clear signal use when changing)
  • Executing shoulder checks before turns / lane changes
  • Pulling off smoothly, stopping correctly, and maintaining safe speeds
  • Handling controlled and uncontrolled intersections

Test Expectations

  • Bring your own Class 5 vehicle and proof of driver education certification.
  • Appointments must be scheduled - preferably via MySGI.
  • Upon arrival, park and remain in your vehicle. Text "Here" if you opted for text notifications and have a valid photo ID ready.
  • No pets or other passengers are allowed during the test.
  • Tests are typically around 20 minutes, but will vary according to weather and traffic.
  • You'll pass if you accumulate 9 demerits or fewer; 10 or more means a fail, and you must wait at least two weeks before rebooking.

Quick Success Tips

  • Practice shoulder checks and mirror use - the examiners will be watching.
  • Perfect your parking - parallel parking is frequently tested.
  • Drive confidently, not aggressively - smooth, steady control is key.
  • Respect school zones - tests often include these areas for speed awareness.
  • Check car condition - ensure your vehicle’s lights, horn, seatbelts, windshield etc. are functioning or the test will be cancelled.
