Alberta Road Test Routes
Getting ready for your Class 5 road test is a big step... and the best way to feel fully-prepared is practising ahead of time. Driving the same streets, intersections, and traffic patterns you’ll face during your actual exam is a proven way to build confidence and reduce nerves. The more familiar you are... the more comfortable you’ll feel on the day.
Do These Match the Real Routes?
Yes - the routes found on the app are modelled on real routes used by Registry Agents across Alberta. Here’s how they’re created:
First-hand Experience: Feedback direct from Alberta test-takers and instructors who have experienced the exact routes.
GPS Mapping: Recorded GPS data tracked during real-world exams.
Test Footage: When tests are recorded, the footage is analyzed and manually mapped for accuracy.
Important: The routes shown on this website are practice examples only, and do not reflect the actual exam. To drive real Alberta routes with turn-by-turn satnav-navigation, please download the app.
Alberta’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program
Alberta employs a step-by-step licensing system designed to help learner drivers gain skills and experience gradually. It’s overseen by Alberta Transportation and involves three key stages:
1. Class 7 Learner’s Licence
To begin, you must be at least 14 years old and pass the Knowledge Test on road rules and traffic signs.
Class 7 drivers must always be accompanied by a fully licensed driver (Class 5, non-GDL) aged 18 or older.
Restrictions include a zero blood-alcohol level, a midnight to 5 a.m. driving curfew (if under 18), and a limit of 8 demerit points.
2. Class 5 GDL (Probationary Licence)
After holding a Class 7 for a minimum of 1 year, and passing the basic Class 5 road test, you can move up to a Class 5 GDL licence.
GDL drivers are able to drive alone, but must follow restrictions: zero blood-alcohol tolerance, no more passengers than seatbelts, and the same Class 7 - 8 demerit point limit.
You must hold your Class 5 GDL licence for a minimum of 2 years before being eligible for the full licence.
3. Full Class 5 Licence
Important Update: Since April 1, 2023, drivers are no longer required to take the advanced road test to exit the GDL program.
Once you’ve held your Class 5 GDL for 24 months without any suspensions, you’ll automatically receive your full Class 5 licence.
At this stage, all normal provincial laws will apply (e.g. 15 demerit point suspension, standard impaired driving rules).
Alberta’s Class 5 Road Test
Passing the Class 5 road test proves you’re ready to drive independently. It’s been designed to confirm that you can apply safe driving practices in real-world traffic, and that you understand the rules of the road in Alberta.
What the Examiner Assesses
You’ll be asked to demonstrate control of the vehicle and good judgment in a variety of situations:
Approaching and navigating intersections safely
Proper use of signals, mirrors, and blind-spot checks
Performing smooth lane changes and merges
Parking manoeuvres, including parallel, angle, and hill parking
Turning safely at both residential and urban streets
Note: Unlike the former advanced road test, this exam tends to focus on city and residential driving rather than extended highway trips.
Why Practising Routes Helps
Each Registry Agent location has its own test routes, with specific intersections, turns, and traffic patterns. By practising real Alberta routes, you’ll already be familiar with them on test day.
Tips to Boost Your Chances
Get comfortable with parking - especially parallel parking on busier streets.
Be observant - mirrors, blind spots, and surroundings should be checked regularly.
Watch your speed - changes in speed limits will test your awareness.
Drive confidently - hesitation can be marked down, just like agressive driving.
